Detailed information on visa application

Students studying in Hungary have to arrive with a student visa (TM-6). They can only apply for a residence permit if they have the visa. This visa can be obtained at the Hungarian Embassy in one’s own country before departure.

Obtaining the visa may take longer than 30 days. Please consider this when planning your departure to Hungary. Please make sure that you have your pink visa paper validated (stamped!) at the border when entering the country.

There are two kinds of residence permits available in Hungary:

  • Temporary residence permit for those who intend to stay less than a year (12 months).
  • Permanent residence permit for those who intend to stay in Hungary for more than a year.

In both cases, the following documents have to be submitted:

  • completed application form for a residence permit
  • completed accommodation registration form
  • duty stamps
  • valid passport (must be valid at least for six months taking into account the date of leaving Hungary)
  • two passport size photographs

For those applying for a permanent residence permit, an additional requirement is an official medical certificate based on a medical examination here in Pécs (cost app. 20,000 HUF or some US$80). For further details concerning the medical examination, please consult the Program Office.

The forms can be obtained at the Immigration Office of the Police Station. The Program Office can also provide its students with most documents required, as well as appropriate instructions and guidance in filling in the necessary forms.

If you need to extend your residence permit during your studies, you need to turn to the South-Danubian Regional Headquarter of the Immigration and Citizenship Office of the Ministry of Home Affairs in Pécs:
