Home Office: blessing or curse of working from home?

The pandemic emergency has been a major headache in recent times, not only for larger but also for smaller businesses.

The constraints of the pandemic have been a major headache in recent times, not only for larger businesses but also for smaller ones. Amongst other things, they have been faced with the question of how to manage work without having to interact at work. As a solution, a previously known form of atypical employment, the home office, has been introduced at global level.

Thanks to home office working, everyone can perform their tasks and manage their affairs from the comfort of their own home. It has also made the job opportunities offered by neighbouring countries more attractive to workers, who can do it from the comfort of their own homes for a higher wage.

An article in Trade Magazine also suggests that it is important for employers to regularly survey feedback, perceptions and expectations on teleworking and hybrid working to see what employees expect from the subject.

But the advantages and disadvantages of working from home are satisfactorily answered in the following list.

THE ADVANTAGES OF HOME OFFICE

People with a disability should not be a barrier to finding a job in the market, as people with disabilities can find jobs that are favourable to them without leaving home.

In most cases, you have to travel several kilometres a day to get to work, but home office can save you time by eliminating the commute.

Thanks to the time saved, we also have more leisure time and more flexibility in our weekdays. We can easily do our errands or shopping during the day, so we can spend more time with the family.

Not only do we save time, but we also put less carbon dioxide into the air. Staying at home can significantly reduce your carbon footprint.

The time saved also means less stress, as there's more time to get ready in the morning, and it's easier to settle disagreements at work, giving you more time to think and spend time on yourself.

THE DISADVANTAGES OF HOME OFFICE

Everybody is happy to save hours a day thanks to the home office, but it can easily overwork you. We can't easily separate work and home life when our living room is also our office.

Thanks to the opportunities offered by teleworking, we tend to work spread hours and try to catch up in the morning or late at night.

Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of the home office is that we have significantly less personal contact and less stimulation. Shared coffee and lunches not only have a positive effect on our relationships, but also on our spirits.

As our home also becomes our workplace, the utility costs can increase significantly.

Another disadvantage of the comfort of our homes is that we miss out on exercise in our daily lives. It's worth paying attention to this and taking short walks and doing various forms of exercise.

TIPS AND ADVICE

To manage the daily lives of employees and ease the transition to teleworking, more and more companies are hiring certified trainers, coaches and mentoring programmes to help their employees.

WHAT'S NEXT?

A study by Citrix System found that 90 percent of the generation born after 1981, also known as digital natives, do not want to return to office work fully in the future. More than half of respondents prefer a hybrid model where they can work from home most or all of the time, while 18 per cent prefer a hybrid model where they can spend a significant part of their working hours in the office.
