In 2022, University of Pécs measured itself for the seventh time in the "UI GreenMetric World University Rankings" international programme.
The University of Pécs was ranked 21st among the world's "green universities" with 1050 universities, and for the third time out of the 11 Hungarian universities included in the ranking, it was the best university in Hungary, earning the title of the greenest Hungarian university in 2022.
"It is important for UP to reduce the environmental pressures from its own activities and the exposure and vulnerability of its infrastructure and operations to local environmental impacts, and to support its collaborating partners in doing the same. Systems thinking, a complex sustainability approach and partner cooperation provide an opportunity to address the challenges in a holistic way. Overall, this result demonstrates that the 4-5 year sustainability goals set at the time of the model change have been met within a year and a half" said Dr. Katalin Szili, member of the UP Board of Trustees responsible for sustainability.
"Through its Green University Programme, the University of Pécs intends to further enhance its sustainability efforts, to do its utmost to promote environmentally conscious attitudes in all sectors, and to spread sustainable solutions vertically and horizontally, especially in the natural, social and economic environment of the South Transdanubian region, as well as in the national and international arena. The transformation of environmental awareness into action depends on many elements, but it basically means providing an alternative and an opportunity for the staff, faculty and students of the university to act with responsibility towards nature and the environment, creating the chance to live more environmentally friendly lives", added István Decsi, Chancellor of UP.
"Thanks to its conscious and disciplined environmental ambitions and its efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, UP has been able to move ahead in the ever-expanding international ranking year after year. The UP Green University Programme is a catalyst for green innovation to achieve the SDGs. The continuous improvement of the University of Pécs is clearly visible in the system based on objective indicators. The University is committed to the green idea and plans its future developments accordingly", said Tünde Kulcsár, Programme Coordinator of the UP Green University.
