The evolution of note taking at UPFBE

The dilemma: Notebook or Tablet?

One of the most important decisions in university life is choosing a note-taking technique. Within the walls of the University of Pécs Faculty of Business and Economics (UPFBE), where traditional theoretical knowledge meets a modern market perspective, students face this dilemma daily. Should they stick with paper and pen, or surrender to the paperless, digital ecosystem? This question goes far beyond convenience; it fundamentally shapes our cognitive processes and learning efficiency.

Handwriting

The arguments for traditional notebook use are not merely nostalgic but deeply rooted in neuropsychology. When we hold a pen, our movements are more complex than keystrokes or sliding across a screen. According to research, during slower, manual recording our brains are forced to select and synthesize what is being said. We don't copy word-for-word, instead, we interpret. In UPFBE subjects like Microeconomics or Macroeconomics physically drawing graphs and formulas helps in understanding relationships. The texture of the notebook, the smell of the ink and the experience of turning pages create a "mental map" that aids recall during exam periods. We will remember exactly that a certain correlation was at the bottom of the page, inside a blue frame.

The Freedom of the Digital Ecosystem

In contrast, a tablet is the Swiss Army knife of the modern economics student. The greatest advantage of digitalization is organization and infinite expandability. An economics student no longer needs to manage five or six thick spiral notebooks per semester, as every course, presentation and supplementary reading fits onto a single thin device. Through cloud-based synchronization, notes are accessible in the Viapan or the library and the search function finds the term "consumer surplus" across the entire semester’s notes in seconds. Today’s tablets can simulate the resistance of paper, so writing with a digital pen combines the benefits of manual work with the precision of technology.

Efficiency Within the University Walls

When making the decision, it is worth considering the specific needs of the faculty. In economics, we work with many case studies and dynamically changing data sets. Here, a tablet is unbeatable. Writing directly onto a PDF uploaded by the teacher or cutting and pasting diagrams provides a speed that the pen-and-paper duo cannot compete with.

At the same time, digital devices are also major sources of distraction. A pop-up notification or an open browser tab can easily break the focused state that the calm of a blank sheet of paper radiates.

The Path of the Hybrid Solution

Ultimately, the choice is a matter of strategy. The most successful students often use a hybrid method. In theoretical lectures requiring deep understanding, they stick to a notebook, while in practical classes and during project work, they take advantage of their tablets.

Whichever tool we choose, the most important aspect remains mindfulness. The university’s community is built on innovation, but this does not mean rejecting the values of the past. Whether you take notes in a leather-bound notebook or on the latest-generation tablet, the point is the structuring of thoughts and the desire to acquire knowledge.

The tool is merely a medium, the real value lies in the attention you show during the lecture.
