For some people in the workplace, “leadership development” is all about equipping people to influence others. That’s a virtuous goal, but it often misses a crucial reality: to be genuinely effective in leading others, you must first master the challenge of leading yourself.
Heather Younger explains the value of strategic networking, how to choose a mentor, and the role of curiosity in self-development. Self-leadership, she says, is not synonymous with doing things all by yourself. The key is building a supportive network.
“It takes a community to grow in self-leadership, but it takes our awareness that we need to grow and desire to involve others in that development that will help us be successful,” she says. “To grow a supportive network, find mentors who can offer guidance, advice, and support as you navigate your personal and professional journey.”
