A hálózatelemzés módszertanát alkalmazva a tanulmány arra a kérdésre keresi a választ, hogy fellelhető-e szignifikáns eltérés a “szegényebb” kelet-európai és “gazdagabb” nyugat európai labdarúgó klubok hálózatának struktúrájában.

Small-world networks and regional traders on the European football transfer market

Abstract

There is a huge difference between European football clubs in their financial and sporting performance, which may be due to their distinct economic conditions and motivations on the transfer market. Transfers of players can be considered a special supply chain; therefore, the investigation of transfer networks and central actors may yield valuable results. Unlike previous research, the European transfer market is investigated on a regional level where different groups are identified as various networks. We assume that these differences are resulted in the diverse structure of networks (small-world/random), with clubs demonstrating very different attitudes. To support this, assuming the transfer market is divided into four networks, the small-world indicators are calculated for each network by applying social network analysis, considering some 20,000 transfers between 2005 and 2019. The practical benefit of this study is the identification of the main participants and brokers in each network

Az utóbbi, Rappai Gábor professzorral közös tanulmány az Egyesült Államok egyik legnevesebb sportgazdasági folyóiratában, az International Journal of Sport Finance (Q2-es besorolású) 2022. évi 17. számában jelent meg “Relationship Between Player Value and Competitive Balance Under the Assumption of Oligopoly” címen. Tanulmányukban a szerzők a labdarúgó klubok vagyonkoncentrációjának versenykiegyensúlyozottságra (competitive balance) gyakorolt hatását vizsgálják.

Relationship Between Player Value and Competitive Balance Under the Assumption of Oligopoly

Abstract

The evolution of competitive balance and its impact on demand is the focus in the field of sports economics. The results of previous studies examining the relationship between competitive balance (CB) and attendance, as well as the direction of the relationship between financial inequality and CB, are not clear. Through panel data of the top five European football leagues, we examine whether there is a causal relationship between the concentration of club wealth and CB. Using different CB measures and the player value concentration as a proxy for wealth concentration, we found that wealth concentration has an impact on competitive imbalance. A partial adjustment model was able to detect the causal relationship even though CB refers to a moment while wealth concentration refers to a period. This study helps to understand why previous research has found conflicting results on the relationship between financial inequality and competitive balance.
